About

The Lithuanian SSR branch of the USSR State Bank was built by architect Vytautas Janonis between 1979 and 1982 and is an example of Soviet modernist architecture. The vast underground cellars below the entire building were designed to store documents, money and as shelter for staff in case of war or unrest. Today, the Druskininkai bank building finds itself in a new chapter. As V. Janonis, the architect of the building, himself said, “Buildings, just like people, change.” Part of the building still serves as a bank. The ground floor now houses a Swedbank branch and a furniture store. The basement, second and third floors of the building are home to the Tech Spa Druskininkai coworking space. The facades of the building are adorned with sculptures by sculptor Donatas Jankauskas-Duonis.
