The Sports Palace (earlier known as Sports Combine) was initially designed in the late 50s and built in 1965. It was the second building of this type in Lithuania (the first being Kaunas Sports Hall) and the first one built in Soviet Lithuania – by comparison, The Sports Palace in Vilnius was constructed six years later. Tennis, handball and volleyball courts were built in the territory nearby. The building of the Palace and the nearby stadium form a single complex. In the building, you can find the Main Hall with a seating capacity of 2 000 people, the Small Hall with balconies, several rooms for Olympic weightlifting, exhibitions, conferences, two swimming pools (the long one (by the standards of the time; 25 m long) and the short one (12.5 m long)), offices for workers and various utility spaces. The early estimated value of the whole complex (stadium and the palace) was 495 000 rubles.
The Sports Palace is an example of the early Soviet modernism. The building exhibits typical architectural features of the period – symmetrical facades, fine vertical lines on the outside of the building, a massive, defining roof above the entrance, and ascetical spaces in the inside.
