8. Shopping Centre “Nemunas” / former department store and restaurant

The former “Nemunas” restaurant is one of Alytus’ notable examples of Soviet-era Modernist architecture. Built in the second half of the 20th century, as the new city centre and its public spaces were taking shape. At the time, the building served as a restaurant and an important venue for gatherings, celebrations and everyday city life. It is based on a typical and standardised (repeatable) design, reflecting the characteristic principles of the period: a clear horizontal composition, restrained forms and rhythmically arranged front windows. Large glass surfaces and concrete structural elements give the building a sense of openness and lightness, while maintaining a functional, rational character.

A sense of spaciousness, large halls, abundant natural light and clearly organised visitor circulation defined the interior. Together, these elements created a setting that was both functional and representative. Over time, in response to the city’s changing economic and social needs, the building’s function changed from a restaurant into a shopping centre. While the interior has since been extensively remodelled, traces of the original architectural concept can still be recognised in the building’s volume and underlying structure.

Today, “Nemunas” is not only a place for everyday shopping but also a fragment of the city’s urban memory, bearing witness to the city’s modernisation and changes in the ways public spaces are used.
