“Snaigė” refrigerator factory is one of the most significant landmarks of the city’s industrial history, reflecting a period when Alytus was rapidly expanding and developing into a modern industrial centre. Founded in 1963, the factory was the first in Lithuania to manufacture domestic refrigerators. Its buildings were constructed on what was then the outskirts of the city, in an open area shaped by the logic of industrial development.

Architecturally, the factory complex embodies the principles of mid-20th century industrial construction: functionality, rationality and a clear spatial structure. The buildings are characterised by a horizontal composition and massive yet restrained façades, defined by concrete structures and rhythmically arranged openings. The interiors retain key features of industrial modernism: spacious production halls, efficient circulation between production areas, and roof windows that flood the spaces with natural light.

Today, “Snaigė” continues to operate as a modern refrigeration equipment factory, while the buildings retain their original architectural logic. It is a living account of Alytus’ industrial development, technological progress and the people who have worked here over the years.
