A Walking Tour of Alytus’ Northern Industrial District with Anthropologist Dr Aušra Teleišė

During the walk, participants will explore Alytus’ Northern Industrial District, which in 1976 was described as the largest industrial complex of its kind in Lithuania. The district was developed during the Soviet era, with the construction of “industrial giants” and “large enterprises” beginning in 1964. It was planned around the idea of an industrial hub, with large factories and industrial complexes concentrated within a compact area and designed in a standardised Modernist style – the result was a visually unified part of the city with a strong sense of functional cohesion.

Following the restoration of Lithuania’s independence, the area underwent a period of radical change. Post-Soviet deindustrialisation, the privatisation and restructuring of industrial enterprises, and the shift from planned to market economy profoundly transformed Alytus’ industrial district. In the process, it acquired an entirely different character, reflecting the ways in which the city developed after the restoration of independence in 1990.

Walking through the Northern Industrial District and exploring it through different senses, visitors will discover the distinctive character of the area while recognising the economic, cultural and social traces of the post-Soviet transformation that continue to shape its identity.
