10. Klaipėdos energija, AB thermal power plant complex
Add to my listAbout
The first public power plant in Klaipėda started operating in 1900. As the demands of the local population and industry increased, a new thermal power plant was constructed on the River Danė in 1929. Later reconstruction projects were led by Herbert Reissmann, a renowned Bauhaus architect. The modern building he designed on Danės Street housed the power plant’s offices and workers’ apartments. Between 1923 and 1944, Reissmann and Alfred Nixdorf designed around 140 buildings in Klaipėda.
At the end of World War II, the plant suffered severe damage – some of the equipment was transported to Germany, while other parts were destroyed. In 1945, both chimneys were blown up. During the post-war years, the plant underwent intensive reconstruction. In the 1960s, thermo-cooling was introduced, and the power plant began generating heat. Between 1960 and 1970, a 120-metre-high chimney was constructed, modern boilers were installed, and district heating networks were laid to connect the plant to other boiler houses across the city.
Warning: The tour route includes climbing narrow, open metal stairs, which may cause discomfort for those with mobility difficulties or a fear of heights. Comfortable, closed-toe footwear is required.
Visitors on the tour will be introduced to the history and inner workings of the power plant. Comfortable, closed-toe footwear is recommended, as some areas require climbing metal stairs and navigating narrow passageways.
