About

The nine-storey building was constructed in 1980 for the Lithuanian Maritime Shipping Administration, based on a 1976 design by architect Rimantas Leonardas Lajus, developed by the Klaipėda branch of the then Urban Construction Design Institute.

The overall massing of the building consists of a taller volume and a three-storey section arranged around the perimeter of J. Janonio and I. Kanto streets. The high-rise portion is set further back from the streets, establishing a distinct landmark on the block. An inner courtyard offers a quiet space for the administration staff to relax.

The late modernist building is designed in line with the trends of the second half of the 20th century. Parts of the façade are constructed of reinforced concrete wall panels, while others are clad in dolomite with metal strip inlays. The architect also designed an advertisement – the Lithuanian Shipping Company sign which survives to this day. Such attention to detail demonstrates the architect’s meticulousness, which is also evident inside: the finishes, the staircase handrails, and their detailing are carefully thought out and coordinated.

The standout interior feature is the stained-glass window in the main lobby – Three Waves by Algirdas Dovydėnas. It looks especially striking in the evening, when sunlight passes through the glass, casting vibrant colours across the otherwise grey space spanning three floors. Another stained-glass window adorns the smaller meeting room.

The building’s location is special – the upper floors provide stunning views of the city and the harbour.
