6. Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Klaipėda University / former Royal Teachers’ Seminary
Add to my listAbout
The Royal Teachers’ Seminary – now the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Klaipėda University – is a significant example of historic academic architecture in Klaipėda. Designed along what was then the prominent Stoties Street, the complex originally included four buildings: an academic building, two residential blocks, and an auxiliary building, all arranged around a courtyard with an orchard and a garden.
The architecture blends German neo-Gothic and historicist styles: red brickwork, decorative pediments, symmetrical composition, and large windows. The building is characterised by strict geometric shapes, horizontal brick bands, arches, and refined façade detailing. The vertical proportions and stepped pediments create the impression of a dignified and respectable institution. Surviving original interior elements – such as the wooden staircase, window frames, and doors – attest to the craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibilities of the period.
The seminary trained primary school teachers who later worked throughout Lithuania. It offered courses in pedagogy, the humanities, and natural sciences, with teaching practice taking place at a nearby primary school. From 1908, it was regarded as one of the most modern institutions of its kind in Germany, equipped with classrooms, a sports hall, an auditorium, a library, a canteen, and a dormitory.
The Royal Teachers’ Seminary is the oldest building and institution in Lithuania to have remained essentially unchanged since its foundation.
